College Career Math Ready

College Career Math Ready: Maybe you’ve seen the promo video, the research, have been trained, or maybe you have no idea what I’m talking about. This course is growing in popularity across all of Oklahoma, for great reasons.

So… What is College Career Math Ready?

College Career Math Ready (CCMR) is a fourth-year math elective course for students who aren’t quite ready for college-level math. The course integrates middle and high school math standards to create an engaging, rigorous, collaborative experience for students.

Why is CCMR such a big deal?

This course offers students a chance to engage with and enjoy mathematics. That’s right, ENJOY MATHEMATICS. It provides opportunities to discuss, collaborate, argue, and make connections that stand-alone classes sometimes leave out. The Depth of Knowledge levels of the problem sets typically fall between 2-4, too, so students are forced to approach this curriculum and select strategies, productively struggle, and justify their answers.

We also did a research study of Oklahoma students, and we found that CCMR students had typical gains of 2-3 points on their ACT after taking the course. In addition, CCMR students who needed remedial math coursework at the college level had an 18% higher success rate than their peers who did not take a math class senior year. This course, along with other math initiatives, have also helped our Oklahoma college math remediation rates drop by 17.5% over the course of one year.

Yeah… but does CCMR really make a difference?

Short answer, yes. Students gain confidence in math and lose some of the anxiety often associated with mathematics. They are more prepared for future math encounters. Hear it directly from teachers and students by watching the video below:
