ARCHIVE: 2009 Math PASS Objectives

You might have heard that Oklahoma is no longer moving toward Common Core. The passage of House Bill 3399 and the subsequent decision by the Oklahoma State Supreme Court to uphold the constitutionality of the bill effectively returns the state of Oklahoma to the Priority Academic State Standards (PASS). While the entire bill is worth a read, here’s the excerpt worth focusing on regarding what standards teachers are meant to use this coming school year:

“Until the statewide student assessments for English Language Arts and Mathematics are implemented as provided for in paragraph 1 of subsection C of this section, the State Board of Education shall implement the subject matter standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics which were in place prior to the revisions adopted by the Board in June 2010” (p.26).

And…

“The statewide student assessments for English Language Arts and Mathematics shall continue to assess standards and objectives found in the subject matter standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics which were in place prior to the revisions adopted by the Board in June 2010 and the test blueprints shall continue to align to the standards and objectives found in such subject matter standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics until the new assessments are implemented as provided for in paragraph 1 of this subsection” (p.27).

Up for debate is which standards were “in place prior to the revisions adopted by the Board in June 2010.” Since the reference to the Board meeting in June 2010 is specifically regarding the adoption of the Common Core State Standards for Math and ELA, the standards that were in place at the time are the PASS Objectives (2009 Revisions). Importantly, the only math standards that were actually revised in 2009 are the 1st through 8th grade standards. The Algebra 1 standards were most recently revised in 2006, and the Geometry and Algebra 2 were most recently revised in 2007. Even still, we refer to the entire document as the 2009 Revisions.

Provided here are a few critical links worth having and knowing about.

Kindergarten standards are provided as a group of content areas including (1) Creative Skills, (2) Language Arts, (3) Mathematics, (4) Motor Skill and Lifetime Activity Development, (5) Science, (6) Social and Personal Skills, (7) Social Studies, and (8) the Arts. Pre-Kindergarten standards cover most of the same areas adding Approaches to Learning and excepting the Arts. The only other category difference is instead of Motor Skill and Lifetime Activity Development, the category is referred to as Health, Safety, and Physical Development.

In addition to the resources developed by the Elementary group, members of the OKMath Summer 2014 Convening developed two documents for secondary math teachers to support vertical alignment efforts and the shift back to PASS: (1) Secondary Math PASS (2009) Standards and (2) Secondary Math PASS (2009) Progressions. The Progressions document is expected to be completed by the end of the July meeting, held July 28-30. For this reason, only 6th, 7th, 8th grades and Algebra 1 are provided below. See the final Secondary Math Progression Guide here.
